What are GLB and OBJ files?

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

Blender writes it from File, Export, glTF 2.0. Most other modeling apps, scanning apps, and online model libraries can export it too.

OBJ, also called Wavefront OBJ, is an old and simple text format for 3D shapes. It lists points and the faces that join them. Almost every 3D app can read and write it, which makes it a common way to move a model between programs.

Almost every 3D app reads OBJ, so it is a safe choice when a program does not accept your model's format. It carries shapes but not colors, textures, or animation.

How to convert GLB to OBJ

Step 1. Drop your GLB file on the converter above, or choose it from your device.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Press the download button. The OBJ file is saved to your device, named like your original with .obj at the end.

Opening a GLB in an app that only reads OBJ

OBJ is the format almost every 3D program can import, including older ones that do not read GLB. Converting is a way to get a web model into those programs for editing.

Expect the shapes and UV coordinates, but not the look. The OBJ has no .mtl file, so colors and textures are not saved. Keep the original GLB nearby. The converter keeps the GLB's Y-up axis and its numbers, so the size is unchanged.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every triangle in the GLB is read. Shapes are written with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Colors, normal maps, and transparency are read. No .mtl file is written, so colors are not kept.

Textures. Pictures stored inside the GLB are read. Textures are not kept.

Animation. Animation clips are read. Animation is not kept, so the model is saved in its first pose.

Units and direction. GLB files are always in meters. Numbers are written as they are, with Y pointing up. OBJ has no unit.

If something looks wrong

Draco and Meshopt compression are read. Other kinds, such as KTX2 textures, are not, so export the file again without that option.

A GLB with many parts becomes one OBJ with an object for each part.

The OBJ has no .mtl file, so most apps show it in plain gray. Add the colors again in the app you open it in.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your GLB file in the browser and writes the OBJ file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this GLB to OBJ converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Can I get the textures out of the GLB?

Not with this converter. It writes the OBJ without a .mtl or pictures. UV coordinates are saved, so textures still fit if you add the pictures again in your 3D app.

Does the OBJ keep the same size?

Yes. OBJ has no unit, so the numbers are written as they are. A GLB is in meters, so a chair 0.9 high in the GLB reads 0.9 in the OBJ. Set your app's import scale if it expects millimeters.

Which unit and direction does the OBJ file use?

Numbers are written as they are, with Y pointing up. OBJ has no unit.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your GLB file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
