What are GLB and USDZ files?

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

Blender writes it from File, Export, glTF 2.0. Most other modeling apps, scanning apps, and online model libraries can export it too.

USDZ is Apple's format for AR. It packs a USD scene and its textures into one file that iPhones and iPads open in AR Quick Look, from Safari, Messages, Mail, and Files.

USDZ is the format Apple devices show in AR. Use it when you want someone to place a model in their room from an iPhone or iPad.

How to convert GLB to USDZ

Step 1. Drop your GLB file on the converter above, or choose it from your device.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Press the download button. The USDZ file is saved to your device, named like your original with .usdz at the end.

Putting a GLB into AR on an iPhone

Android shows GLB in AR, but Apple devices want USDZ. A USDZ opens in AR Quick Look from Safari, Messages, Mail, and Files, and a person can place the model in their room with no app.

Check the size first. AR shows the model at its real size, and a GLB is in meters, so a chair 0.9 high stands 90 centimeters tall in the room. Then share the USDZ: link to it from a web page, send it in Messages or Mail, or save it in Files. We cannot test every model on every device, so open the file on an iPhone before you send it to a client.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every triangle in the GLB is read. Shapes are written with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Colors, normal maps, and transparency are read. Materials become standard materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.

Textures. Pictures stored inside the GLB are read. Pictures are packed into the file and scaled down to 2048 pixels on the longest side.

Animation. Animation clips are read. Animation is not kept, so the model is saved in its first pose.

Units and direction. GLB files are always in meters. The file is in meters with Y pointing up, so the model appears at its real size in AR.

If something looks wrong

If the model looks gray, its pictures may have been left out of the file. Export it again with the textures embedded.

Draco and Meshopt compression are read. Other kinds, such as KTX2 textures, are not, so export the file again without that option.

Textures are scaled down to 2048 pixels on the longest side to keep AR files light.

If Quick Look shows the model without its colors, its materials may use effects that USDZ does not carry. Plain color and texture materials are the safest.

A USDZ opens at the real size set by its meters. Check the size shown before you share it.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your GLB file in the browser and writes the USDZ file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this GLB to USDZ converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Will my model look the same in AR Quick Look?

Color, color pictures, normal maps, glow, and transparency are written. Advanced glTF material effects and the lighting of the original scene are not, so some models look plainer. Check on a device.

Does the USDZ keep my animation?

No. The USDZ is written in the model's first pose. This converter does not write animation to USDZ.

Which unit and direction does the USDZ file use?

The file is in meters with Y pointing up, so the model appears at its real size in AR.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your GLB file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
