What are OBJ and GLB files?
OBJ, also called Wavefront OBJ, is an old and simple text format for 3D shapes. It lists points and the faces that join them. Almost every 3D app can read and write it, which makes it a common way to move a model between programs.
Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Rhino, ZBrush, SketchUp Pro, and many scanning apps can export OBJ.
GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.
GLB is a good choice for the web, for AR on Android, and for most game engines and 3D viewers. Everything travels in one file.
How to convert OBJ to GLB
Step 1. Drop your OBJ file on the converter above, or choose it from your device. If the model comes with other files, such as pictures, a .bin, or a .mtl, choose them in the same go.
Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.
Step 3. Check the unit. OBJ does not say which unit it uses. Choose the unit your model was made in, and the GLB file is scaled to meters. The size next to the download button changes with it.
Step 4. Press the download button. The GLB file is saved to your device, named like your original with .glb at the end.
Packing an OBJ and its pictures into one file
An OBJ is rarely alone. It usually comes with an .mtl file that lists colors and with picture files for textures. Send the OBJ without them and the model arrives gray. A GLB solves that, because the shapes, colors, and pictures all live in one file.
To keep the look, choose the .obj, the .mtl, and the pictures together in the file window. Hold Ctrl or Shift to select several. The converter matches them by file name, so do not rename them. Without the .mtl you still get the shape, in plain white.
What survives the conversion
Shapes. Every face is read, and faces with more than three corners are cut into triangles. Every triangle is written, with normals and UV coordinates.
Colors and materials. Colors come from the .mtl file when you pick it together with the OBJ. Without it the model is plain. Materials are written as standard glTF materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.
Textures. Pictures named in the .mtl are read when you pick them too. Pictures are packed into the file.
Animation. OBJ cannot hold animation. Animation clips are kept.
Units and direction. OBJ does not say which unit it uses. The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.
If something looks wrong
If the colors are missing, choose the .mtl file together with the .obj. The .obj names it on a line that starts with mtllib.
OBJ files from CAD tools can be very large. If yours is over the size limit, export a smaller part.
Textures come in as color pictures only. Bump maps and specular maps listed in the .mtl are not carried over.
If your app shows the model sideways, check its import axis. A GLB has Y pointing up.
If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.
Your file stays on your device
The converter reads your OBJ file in the browser and writes the GLB file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.
Questions
Is this OBJ to GLB converter free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.
Will my OBJ textures work in the GLB?
Yes, if you choose the picture files together with the OBJ and its .mtl. The pictures are packed into the GLB. If the .mtl points to a picture you did not choose, that surface is left plain.
Will the GLB be smaller than my OBJ?
Often, because a GLB stores numbers in binary and an OBJ stores them as text. The pictures usually take most of the space either way, so the size depends on them.
Which unit and direction does the GLB file use?
The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.
How large a file can I convert?
Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render
Open the studio and add your OBJ file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
