Why listing photos get refused

Listing sites and MLS systems set rules for photos. The rules usually cover the size in pixels, the shape of the photo and the size of the file. A camera or a phone makes files much larger than a listing needs, so an upload can be refused or slow.

This tool resizes a batch of photos to the size you choose, in one pass. It can also keep every file under a size limit, such as 2 MB. You can download the results one at a time or as one ZIP file.

How to resize your photos

1. Add your photos. Drop up to 40 JPG, PNG or WebP files, each up to 50 MB, or choose them from your device.

2. Pick a size from the list, or choose Your own size and type a width and height.

3. Choose the shape. Fit keeps the whole photo. Crop to the exact size cuts the edges so every photo has the same shape.

4. Set a file size limit if your site has one. Leave it at No limit if it does not.

5. Select Resize. When the photos are done, download each one or the whole set as a ZIP file.

Choosing the right size

Photo rules differ between MLSs, portals and brokerages, and they change. Some set a minimum size, some a maximum, and some a file size limit. Read the photo rules for your MLS or portal and match them. This page does not list any MLS's rules, because we cannot keep them current.

The sizes in the list are common choices, not requirements: 1024 × 768 (4:3), 1920 × 1080 (16:9), 2048 × 1365 (3:2) and 3000 × 2000 (3:2). A tall photo gets the tall version of the size, so a portrait shot is not squeezed into a wide frame.

A photo that is smaller than the size you pick stays as it is. A larger copy has the same detail with more pixels, so enlarging is off unless you turn it on. If your site needs a minimum size, read the line under each finished photo: it states the final size.

Fit or crop

Fit keeps everything in the frame. A 3:2 photo resized to a 16:9 size stays 3:2, with its longest side fitting the box, so one side can be shorter than the size you picked.

Crop to the exact size fills the whole size and cuts what does not fit, evenly from both edges. Use it when a site wants every photo the same shape, and look at the edges of each result afterward.

Keeping files under a size limit

When you pick a limit, the tool starts at your quality setting, which is 90 unless you change it. If the file is too big, it lowers the quality, never below 50, and keeps the best quality that fits. If the file is still too big, it makes the photo smaller in small steps.

If it cannot reach the limit without making the photo much smaller, the line under that photo says so. It does not pretend it worked.

If something looks wrong

A photo comes out sideways. The tool turns photos the way their rotation tag says. If a photo was saved sideways with no tag, rotate it first.

A transparent PNG gets a white background, because JPG has no transparency.

The results are new JPG files with no camera, date or location tags. To check or remove the tags of files you do not resize, use the photo metadata remover.

A phone can run out of memory with very large photos. Photos are done one at a time, but if the page stops responding, try fewer photos in a run.

Questions

What size should MLS photos be?

There is no single answer. MLSs and portals set their own rules, and some set a minimum, a maximum or both. Check your MLS's photo rules, then pick a matching size here or choose Your own size.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser opens and resizes the photos on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Will resizing lower the quality?

A smaller photo has fewer pixels, which is the point of resizing. Photos are saved as JPG at the quality you choose, 90 by default. Lower numbers make smaller files with more visible compression.

Can I make small photos larger?

Yes, with the option to make smaller photos larger. It adds pixels but no detail, so a small photo looks soft. If you can, resize from the original file instead.

Why is my photo not exactly the size I picked?

In Fit mode the whole photo is kept, so its shape decides one of the two sides. Choose Crop to the exact size if every photo must match the size exactly.

How many photos can I resize at once?

Up to 40 at a time, each up to 50 MB. They are done one after another so the page stays responsive. For more, run another batch.
