Free FBX to GLB Converter

Drop an FBX file below to save it as a GLB for the web, AR, or a game engine. The conversion runs in your browser, so your model is never uploaded.

What are FBX and GLB files?

FBX is a 3D format owned by Autodesk. It is a usual way to move characters, props, and scenes between modeling apps and game engines, and it can hold shapes, materials, skeletons, and animation.

Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, and Mixamo export FBX, and Unity and Unreal Engine import it.

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

GLB is a good choice for the web, for AR on Android, and for most game engines and 3D viewers. Everything travels in one file.

How to convert FBX to GLB

Step 1. Drop your FBX file on the converter above, or choose it from your device. If the model comes with other files, such as pictures, a .bin, or a .mtl, choose them in the same go.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Check the unit. An FBX states its unit in its settings, and the converter reads it. If the file sets none, it is read as centimeters, which is what FBX assumes. You can change it. Choose the unit your model was made in, and the GLB file is scaled to meters. The size next to the download button changes with it.

Step 4. Press the download button. The GLB file is saved to your device, named like your original with .glb at the end.

Getting an FBX ready for the web or AR

FBX is made for moving assets between modeling apps and game engines. GLB is made for showing them. A common job is taking a character or product from Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender and putting it on a web page, in a 3D viewer, or in an Android AR app. Those places read GLB directly, and they load one file instead of an FBX with a folder of pictures.

If the pictures are separate files, choose them together with the FBX. Then check the unit. The converter reads the unit the FBX states, and assumes centimeters, the FBX default, when it states none. A GLB is always read as meters, so a character that is 180 units tall in centimeters comes out 1.8 meters tall. If the setting in the file is wrong, choose the right unit and the GLB is written again.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every mesh in the file is read. Every triangle is written, with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Basic colors are read. Complex shader setups are simplified. Materials are written as standard glTF materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.

Textures. Pictures embedded in the FBX are read, and so are pictures you pick together with it. Pictures are packed into the file.

Animation. Animation clips are read. Animation clips are kept.

Units and direction. An FBX states its unit in its settings, and the converter reads it. If the file sets none, it is read as centimeters, which is what FBX assumes. You can change it. The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

If something looks wrong

If the textures are missing, they were probably saved as separate files. Choose them together with the FBX, or embed the media when you export.

Very old FBX versions may not open. Export the file again with a newer FBX version.

If the GLB opens with the model far too large or far too small, the unit was wrong. Choose the unit again and the file is written again right away.

If your app shows the model sideways, check its import axis. A GLB has Y pointing up.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your FBX file in the browser and writes the GLB file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this FBX to GLB converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Does the converter keep my FBX animation?

Animation clips are read from the FBX and written into the GLB. The viewers on this site show the first pose and do not play clips, so check the motion in the app where you will use the GLB. If a clip cannot be written, it is left out and the converter says so.

Why is my model the wrong size after converting?

The converter reads the unit your FBX states in its settings, and uses centimeters, the FBX default, when the file states none. Some apps write the wrong setting, so if the size looks off, choose the unit your model was made in. A GLB is always in meters, and the size next to the download button updates.

Which unit and direction does the GLB file use?

The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your FBX file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
