What are 3MF and GLB files?

3MF is a 3D printing format from the 3MF Consortium. It is a zip file that holds the model as XML. Unlike STL, it states its unit, and it can hold colors and several parts.

PrusaSlicer, Cura, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Windows 3D Builder, and many CAD apps can save 3MF.

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

GLB is a good choice for the web, for AR on Android, and for most game engines and 3D viewers. Everything travels in one file.

How to convert 3MF to GLB

Step 1. Drop your 3MF file on the converter above, or choose it from your device.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Check the unit. 3MF files state their unit, and it is read from the file. Choose the unit your model was made in, and the GLB file is scaled to meters. The size next to the download button changes with it.

Step 4. Press the download button. The GLB file is saved to your device, named like your original with .glb at the end.

Sharing a 3MF model without a slicer

3MF files come from slicers and CAD tools, and few viewers outside printing software open them. A GLB opens almost anywhere 3D is shown. Converting lets you send a model to a client or put it on a page, and they do not need a slicer.

The 3MF states its unit, so the size comes out right in the GLB, which is in meters. Colors that the 3MF holds for each part carry over. A 3MF with a whole build plate becomes one GLB with every part on it, so remove the parts you do not want to share before you export from your slicer.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every object in the file is read. Every triangle is written, with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Base colors and vertex colors are read. Materials are written as standard glTF materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.

Textures. Most 3MF files hold no textures. Those that do are read. Pictures are packed into the file.

Animation. 3MF cannot hold animation. Animation clips are kept.

Units and direction. 3MF files state their unit, and it is read from the file. The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

If something looks wrong

Print settings stored in the file are ignored. Only the model's shapes and colors are read.

If the file holds a whole build plate, every part on it is read and converted.

Print settings and slicer notes inside the 3MF are not carried over. The GLB holds the model only.

If your app shows the model sideways, check its import axis. A GLB has Y pointing up.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your 3MF file in the browser and writes the GLB file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this 3MF to GLB converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Are the colors from my multicolor print kept?

Base colors set on parts and colors stored on the vertices are read and written to the GLB. Detail that a slicer keeps in its own extra data may not be.

Which unit does my GLB use?

A GLB is always in meters. The converter reads the unit your 3MF states, such as millimeters, and scales the model to meters. A 3MF part 80 mm wide becomes 0.08 meters wide.

Which unit and direction does the GLB file use?

The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your 3MF file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
