What are DAE and GLB files?

DAE is the file extension of COLLADA, an open XML format from the Khronos Group for moving 3D models between programs. It was common before glTF and is still used by SketchUp, older game tools, and some simulation software.

SketchUp exports DAE, and so do other design and animation tools, often under the name COLLADA.

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

GLB is a good choice for the web, for AR on Android, and for most game engines and 3D viewers. Everything travels in one file.

How to convert DAE to GLB

Step 1. Drop your DAE file on the converter above, or choose it from your device. If the model comes with other files, such as pictures, a .bin, or a .mtl, choose them in the same go.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Press the download button. The GLB file is saved to your device, named like your original with .glb at the end.

Moving a SketchUp or older COLLADA model forward

COLLADA was the usual way to share models before glTF. Many older assets, SketchUp exports, and simulation models are still DAE files. Modern web viewers, AR apps, and game engines favor GLB, so converting makes an old asset easier to use.

A DAE usually points to its pictures by file name, so choose the pictures together with the DAE. The unit set inside the file is applied while it is read, so the GLB comes out in meters at the right size. If your model came as a .zae, unzip it first.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every mesh in the file is read. Every triangle is written, with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Basic colors are read. Materials are written as standard glTF materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.

Textures. Pictures embedded in the file are read, and so are pictures you pick together with it. Pictures are packed into the file.

Animation. Basic animation clips are read. Animation clips are kept.

Units and direction. The unit set inside the file is applied, so the model arrives in meters. The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

If something looks wrong

A DAE usually points to its pictures by file name. Choose the pictures together with the DAE so the textures show.

A COLLADA file saved as a .zae is a zip. Unzip it first, then choose the .dae and its pictures.

A DAE saved with unusual options may fail to open. Export it again from the source app with the default COLLADA settings.

If your app shows the model sideways, check its import axis. A GLB has Y pointing up.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your DAE file in the browser and writes the GLB file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this DAE to GLB converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Does DAE animation carry over?

Simple animation clips are read and kept. Rigs made in some apps may not read correctly, so check the result in the app where you will use it.

Why are the textures missing from my GLB?

A DAE refers to its pictures by file name. Choose the pictures together with the DAE. Without them the model is plain.

Which unit and direction does the GLB file use?

The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your DAE file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
