What are glTF and GLB files?

glTF is a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. A .gltf file is the text form. It usually points to a .bin file that holds the shapes and to image files for the textures, so one model is a small set of files.

Blender writes it from File, Export, glTF 2.0 when the format is set to glTF Separate or glTF Embedded. Many other apps offer the same choice.

GLB is the single-file form of glTF, a 3D format kept by the Khronos Group. One GLB holds a model's shapes, materials, textures, and animation. It is built to load fast, so it is common on the web, in AR, and in game engines.

GLB is a good choice for the web, for AR on Android, and for most game engines and 3D viewers. Everything travels in one file.

How to convert glTF to GLB

Step 1. Drop your glTF file on the converter above, or choose it from your device. If the model comes with other files, such as pictures, a .bin, or a .mtl, choose them in the same go.

Step 2. Look at the preview. If the model lies on its side, change the up direction to match your file.

Step 3. Press the download button. The GLB file is saved to your device, named like your original with .glb at the end.

Turning a folder of glTF files into one file

A .gltf model is often a folder: the .gltf text, a .bin with the shapes, and a set of pictures. Many sites, apps, and mail systems want a single file. A GLB holds the same model in one piece, so nothing goes missing when you upload or send it.

Open the folder, select the .gltf and the files beside it, and drop them all on the converter at once. Hold Ctrl or Shift to select several files in the file window. The converter matches names and ignores folders, so keep the file names as they are. The result has the same shapes, materials, textures, and animation as the original.

What survives the conversion

Shapes. Every triangle is read, whether it is stored in the .gltf or in a .bin file you pick with it. Every triangle is written, with normals and UV coordinates.

Colors and materials. Colors, normal maps, and transparency are read. Materials are written as standard glTF materials: color, color texture, normal map, glow, and transparency.

Textures. Pictures stored inside the file are read, and so are pictures you pick together with the .gltf. Pictures are packed into the file.

Animation. Animation clips are read. Animation clips are kept.

Units and direction. glTF files are always in meters. The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

If something looks wrong

Choose the .gltf and every file that goes with it in one go: the .bin and the pictures. Hold Ctrl or Shift to choose several in the file window, or drag them all in together.

The file names must match what the .gltf says. Folders and capital letters do not matter, but a renamed file cannot be found.

A glTF that uses Draco or Meshopt compression opens, and the GLB is written without compression, so it may be larger than the original.

Extensions beyond the common glTF set, such as some advanced material effects, may be dropped when the file is written again.

If your app shows the model sideways, check its import axis. A GLB has Y pointing up.

If your browser cannot draw 3D, there is no preview, but the conversion still works.

Your file stays on your device

The converter reads your glTF file in the browser and writes the GLB file there too. Nothing is uploaded, and the page does not load anything the file points to, other than files you choose yourself. The page counts a visit like any other page, but it never sees the file's name or contents.

Questions

Is this glTF to GLB converter free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, and you do not need an account. Your file is read and converted in your browser and never uploaded, so it stays on your device.

Why does the converter say my glTF needs other files?

The .gltf names a .bin file, and the converter cannot find it. Choose the .gltf and the .bin together. If you only have the .gltf, ask the person who made it for the whole folder, or export a GLB from the source app.

Will the GLB look the same as my glTF?

The shapes, colors, pictures, and animation carry over. The converter writes the file again, so extras outside the common glTF set are not kept, and neither is Draco or Meshopt compression.

Which unit and direction does the GLB file use?

The file is in meters, with Y pointing up.

How large a file can I convert?

Files up to 150 MB. A very large model may convert slowly on a phone or an older computer, so export only the part you need if it struggles.

Make it a finished render

Open the studio and add your glTF file. The studio opens GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX, STL, 3MF, or DAE files. You pick the angle and describe the finish, and Inkfinish renders that view as a finished image.
